Quiet Keystrokes and Midnight Ramblings

It's a surreal thing to read a news article that sounds like the synopsis for Adaline . One of the news stories that was in my feed today was the story of unaccompanied children being kept in chain link cages by Homeland Security due to illegal entry to the United States. The gist of the article, if you haven't read it, is that families who have been found to be entering the U.S. illegally are being detained. While the parents or guardians of the children are awaiting trial, their children are being sent to detention centers where they are kept in large chain-link encased holding areas.  In Adaline , children are born into an automated society where humans are essentially bred and then curated. A collection of perfect human clones, groomed and cared for by their robot overlords for no other reason than that's what the A.I. is programmed to do. Yesterday while I was peddling away at the gym, I stumbled across the Science Fiction and Fantasy Marketing Podcast  and it quickly became one of my new favorite podcasts to listen to. The episode I watched was #139 with guest author Joanna Penn. It was refreshing to hear authors talk frankly about what works for them (so many seem to keep their trials and errors close to their chest). My big takeaway was: Write for the fans you'll have in the future. I tend to get caught up in the daily stats of what my writing is doing. Sometimes that can be a really empowering and exciting thing, when a book is climbing the charts because of a promotion or ad campaign. Sometimes, it's immensely depressing when there's nothing but crickets chirping on the charts and graphs. But Joanna Penn made a great point, and it's one that I want to keep front of mind as I continue to work on Curie, book three in my Adaline series. Well, isn't this embarassing? I haven't updated this blog in a LONG time. Here's a quick update: Biocide, Book Two of the Adaline series launched! We had a big party, and lots of fanfare. It was great! Now, a new book is on the horizon. My memoir - Woman With a Thousand Hats. It's coming out New Year's Eve and I'm so excited / horrified to be putting my story out there. The story of who I am and where I come from is littered with turbulent times, lots of humor, and a few "What was I thinking?" moments. My beta readers have had lots of lovely things to say about it so far, and I can't wait to release it to the public. Speaking of releasing the book - that's where I need help! This time around I'm running a Thunderclap campaign to help push Woman With a Thousand Hats into viral internet territory. It's the easiest social media campaign platform I've tried so far. Guess what? I've been writing. Biocide, the second book in the Adaline series is in the final stages of production. I'm editing the manuscript now, and hope to have the book in print and ready for your bookshelf in just a few weeks. I'm so excited for the production of Biocide, that I just had to give Adaline a facelift to keep up with the direction that the series is going. There's a new cover, a couple of new sentences on the pages, and a nifty promotion for Biocide tucked into the back of the book.  The Adaline series is taking its next big step forward, and as always I have to thank you readers for helping me to take the leap.
